How do I split a long form into several screens so more people complete it?
Turn the form into a survey. In the form builder a regular form is a single screen, and the Survey option is the multi-screen version.
- Open the form in the form builder.
- On the Forms tab, click the Survey option (switch the form type from Form to Survey).
- Confirm when asked if you want to change it.
- Arrange the questions across screens and reorder them, for example name, email and phone on screen one, company details on screen two and the last questions on screen three.
If your form shows a Next step button but still displays everything on one screen, it is still set to a regular form, so switch it to Survey. Converting also greatly reduces the height of the form box on the page. Multistep order forms are available for payments too.
Votel recommends three or four questions at most per screen. A long single form feels like a lot of work and people abandon it: someone may not answer six questions but will answer three. Ask only for the fields you really need; if capturing the lead is the goal, name, email and phone are often enough. Putting name and email first also means that if the person leaves before the last step, you still have a lead. Make the submit button text match your call to action instead of the word submit, and change the form colors to match your website.
